What lighting can do?
The vast majority of our worldly experiences come from our eyes, and vision needs light. Thus, light is the medium by which the universe is viewed by most people.
Light is available at the lowest possible cost, but it is a precious business asset that requires keen thinking and a practical approach to consider the correct designs and pieces of equipment for investment.
A light conversation
The method of providing lighting to spaces is lighting design. It starts with a discussion about organizational and consumer criteria with the owner. This discussion includes questions like:
- Who is going to use the space?
- What are their requirements for lighting?
- What are the features of space?
- What company priorities should be sponsored by lighting?
- What does the owner want the room to communicate?
- How important is the quality of energy and the ease of maintenance?
- What limitations, such as energy and budget codes, apply?
Techniques
Different methods may be used to achieve particular lighting effects, apart from the superficial lighting layers. These include downlighting, washing/grazing the wall, lighting the cove, uplighting, silhouetting, and glitter/sparkle aesthetics.
The visible lighting equipment and aesthetics would also affect how the room and its owner are viewed. For instance, a decorative, sparkling chandelier in a hotel lobby may convey elegance. A calm, high-tech look is conveyed by linear suspended luminaries instead of Troffers in an office. Likewise, the architecture of luminaries conveys an aesthetic impression. Luminaries should always be arranged in a way that is not visually jarring (unless desired by the designer).
